Women's Day On the occasion of Woman's Day, the AUB alumni - Bekaa Branch gave a seminar in March 2000 on women's health sponsored by the Eli Lilly Women's Health Center. Held under the auspices of First Lady Mrs. Andre Lahoud (represented by Minister Michel Moussa,) the seminar was presented by Dr. Adnan Mroueh, Mrs. Sonia Attieh, and Dr. Najla Hemadeh. It was moderated by president of the branch, Dr. Faysal el-Kak. Presentations focused on evolving trends in women's health, from the clinical, social, and legal perspectives. Issues of empowering women to their health rights and social justice were the subject animated discussion with the audience. The activity ended with a brunch. Bekaa Graduates Honored To mark the graduation of Bekaa students, the AUB Alumni-Bekaa Branch held a ce-remonial dinner in August 2000 to celebrate some 30 new Bekaa graduates in various disciplines. The dinner, attended by numerous alumni and friends, was addressed by HE Elie Skaf (B.Agr '75). The speaker emphasized three points: 1. Ensuring a diversity of specialties in the Bekaa area, 2. Arranging for job opportunities so that new graduates can stay in their home area and 3. Linking all Bekaa alumni together for the well-being of the community and students. Certificates of honor were then distributed, with Ms Yumna Karaoi speaking on the behalf of graduates. This fundraising event was sponsored by Byblos Bank and Tanmia. Bekaa Branch Iftar As part of fund-raising activities to support scholarships for Bekaa students, the AUB Alumni Beqaa Branch held its 6th annual Iftar in December 2000. The event was attended by many Bekaa notables, alumni and friends. Dr. Faysal Kak addressed the audience, speaking about the future role of alumni in interacting with the community, as well as safe-guarding ethical and moral values and contributing to national and international debates. Guest speaker, H.E. Dr. Bassil Fleihan, Minister of Economy, held an open discussion with the audience, touching on current matters such as economic reform, agricultural issues and future job opportunities for new graduates. Dr. Fleihan also analyzed challenges facing the new government and plans to deal with them. At the conclusion of the Iftar Dr. Fleihan received the alumni shield from the president of the branch. Mr. Mussa Freiji, a prominent alumnus, was also awarded the shield. |
