The Faculty
of Agricultural and Food Sciences and the FAFS Chapter of the AUB Alumni
Association recently held a conference under the patronage of Minister
of Agriculture Ali Abdallah. The event, entitled "Towards a New Millennium
of Agricultural Innovations, took place between November 7 and 10, with
sessions on campus and at the Beirut Forum. Speakers at the opening ceremony
included Minister Ali Abdallah, Dr. Nasri S. Kawar, Chairman of the Conference
Organizing Committee and Dr. Nuhad J. Daghir, Dean of FAFS.
Dr. Anthony Shelton, Professor and Associate Director of Research
at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, gave the keynote lecture entitled "Harnessing
the Power of Biology to Benefit Agriculture and Food Systems in the New
Millennium." The conference was held in conjunction with Agritech
Middle East 2000 and the 6th International Exhibition for Agriculture
Technology, Farming and Irrigation Serving the Middle East.
Three successive technical sessions at the Beirut Forum were devoted to
the subjects of Biotechnology, the Environment and Nutraceuticals. A number
of speakers from universities abroad were featured in each session.

Student Wins Abd al-Aal Prize
Hamdy Salhab, a graduate student at the Faculty of Engineering,
has been awarded the Association of Friends of Ibrahim Abd al-Aal annual
prize to complete his MA thesis on "A Pricing Policy for a Growing
Electricity Market."

WORLD PRESS
PHOTO EXHIBITION 2000
An
exhibition of professional press photographs took place at Issam Fares
Hall between November 21 and 27. Sponsored by World Press Photo, an independent
nonprofit organization founded in 1955, the photos captured the most disturbing
of world events for our scrutiny.
The pictures on show were winners of a competition, to which 42,215 photos
were submitted by 3,981 photographers from 122 countries. The traveling
exhibition, unique of its kind, was brought to Beirut with the support
of the Royal Netherlands Embassy, ABN/AMRO Bank, St. Joseph University,
Holy Spirit University, AUB, Kodak Near East and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
