On July 5,
2000 the Women's Auxiliary Association (WAA) held its Annual Toy Tea Party--marking
the high point of the Association's 50th anniversary celebrations.
Mrs. Nabila Firzli, President of the WAA, opened the meeting by
welcoming the audience and discussing the Association's activities. Dr.
Selwa Makarem, Director of the School of Nursing, then thanked the Auxiliary
for its continuing support.
Dr. Makarem went on to announce the names of student nurses who
had won various awards, including the Mary Crawford, Anny Smith, Poppy
Haddad, Henriette Sabra, Najla Marston, Emily Asfour, and Hannie Chahine
Awards. The Annette Hajjar Scholarship was won by Mr. Tony Shamoun. Mrs.
Firzli next took the stand to present awards to the "Registered Nurse
of the Year" and the "Practical Nurse of the Year".
Mr. John Rhoder, Director of AUBMC, spoke of his gratitude to the
WAA for its generous contributions to the Medical Center, namely, "The
Emergency Fund". He asked that the new Emergency Fund be named "The
Women's Auxiliary Nabila Firzli Emergency Fund" in recognition of
her 30 years of outstanding service. During her eleven years as President
of the Association, Mrs. Firzli introduced important changes that have
enhanced the WAA's accomplishments.
Upon recommendation of the Executive Board, Mr. Rhoder presented
a plaque on behalf of the Medical Center Administration to the dedicated
volunteers who have served for 25 years: Leila Iliya, Jacqueline Rebeiz,
Helen Harmouche, Zilda Deeb and Alexandra Jureidini.
The event ended with a musical program presented by "Les Choristes
du Grand Lycée Franco-Libanais de Beyrouth", directed by Mrs.
Nouha Hatem, and organized by Mrs. Dolly Talhamé, Program Chairperson.
After the program everyone enjoyed the sumptuous buffet and a "Cup

visitors to the Career Open House. |
Over 6,000
students from some 100 Lebanese high schools thronged West Hall on October
26 and 27 to attend AUB's fifth annual career fair.
The event, organized by student counselor Maryam Ghandour in cooperation
with AUB's six faculties, introduced the students to the majors and academic
programs offered at AUB. The visitors were also given information about
admission requirements, financial aid policies, extra-curricular activities
and student life.
AUB ushers met the incoming students at the Sea Gate and provided
them with a campus map, a schedule of events, and then escorted them to
the Open House. Although some schools were late due to traffic, extra
effort was made to accommodate everyone. After the orientation program,
AUB catalogues and CD ROMs were distributed to the students. The visitors
were then free to wander around the stands where members of the various
faculties answered questions and provided further information.
