Department of Surgery Dedicates Libraries

The dedication ceremony at AUBMC

Two libraries at the AUB Department of Surgery have now been named in honor of two medical professionals known for their long history with the department: Dr. John Wilson and Dr. Joseph McDonald, who were both associated for years with the Faculty of Medicine at AUB and were at different times department chairs and deans of the faculty.

"Several generations of surgeons owe them a great deal," said Dr. Ismail Khali, acting chairperson of the department. "McDonald established the residency program and Wilson led the first batch of surgeons at the department."

The libraries provide for electronic database facilities and also include a conference room that networks to the operating room, thus allowing surgeons and other attendees to watch live cases being broadcast on video.
The equipment was made possible through a generous gift from the AUB Alumni Surgical Society of North America, which has been supporting the library since 1999. Dr. Imad Dandan, the current president of the Society, promised continued support.

A vascular surgery clinic was also named after Dr. Fuad and Malak Dagher, whose donation was a 50th wedding anniversary gift from their children. Dr. Dagher is among those who helped put the vascular surgery program on an accreditation track and was the chief medical officer of the hospital from 2001 to 2002.
