Director's Message

The Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) team at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) is committed to providing high-quality, compassionate, and state-of-the-art care. We shall make every effort to utilize the transplantation-based therapies and expertise to serve your personalized needs to eliminate cancer. Our program has a strong dedication to clinical and basic science research and to advancing the field of BMT.

History
In February 1998, the first Autologous Peripheral Stem Cell Transplantation (APSCT) was performed at AUBMC. Since then, more than 150 APSCT's were successfully performed. In March 2005, the first allogeneic BMT was performed.

Transplantation Unit
The official opening of the Transplantation Unit took place on the eighth floor of the Medical Center on July 22, 2004. The new Transplantation Unit is the second to open in Lebanon and consists of five isolation rooms equipped with laminar flow or hepa-filters for BMT operations.

In addition to the clinical services, a BMT database of the AUBMC transplantation activity was established. This database includes all relevant data on all transplanted patients with a yearly followup. A detailed report of the AUBMC BMT activity is submitted to the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) on a yearly basis.

Accreditation
The BMT Program at AUBMC received the EBMT accreditation and is an official member of the EBMT center (number CIC 369).

The EBMT is a non-profit organization based in Maastricht, the Netherlands, which was established in 1974 in order to allow scientists and physicians involved in clinical BMT to share their experience and develop cooperative studies. The EBMT aims to promote all aspects associated with the transplantation of haematopoietic stem cells from all donor sources and donor types, including basic and clinical research, education, standardization, quality control, and accreditation for transplantation procedures. You can visit http://www.ebmt.org for more information.
