Dr. George Nemer earned his B.Sc degree in Biology from
the American University of Beirut (1992). He received his Ph.D. degree with
high distinction (the thesis being classified in the upper 5% in its field)
in Molecular Pharmacology from the Université de Montréal (2001). Dr Nemer
worked as a research fellow at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal (IRCM)
before moving to the department of Biochemistry in the Faculty of Medecine
at AUB (October 2002). He received many scholarships from Pfizer Canada and
Gibco-Ingelheimer for his work on transcription factors in heart development
and diseases, which were published in prestigious journals including Cell,
which high-lightened the impact of his published article on the role of Tbx5
in the Holt-Oram syndrome by using one of its figures as a cover page for
its September 21, 2001 issue. Since moving to AUB, Dr Nemer is focusing on
the genetic and molecular bases of congenital heart diseases (CHD) in the
Lebanese population. CHDs occur in 1 per 100 live births, and are still the
major risk factors for early morbidity in neonate children. In collaboration
with Dr Fadi Bitar who established the first Cardiac Registry Center at the
AUH with more than 1000 patients, Dr Nemer is exploring the genetic causes
of these CHDs. Mutations if found will be analyzed in vitro, and in vivo
mice models will be generated to understand the molecular bases behind such
defects. Computational analysis of the mutated proteins will help design
novel drugs and trials can be started on those mice models.
