Residents’ training is an important function of the department. It includes the basic principles of anesthesiology, physiology, pharmacology and acute medicine that are essential for training. Detailed discussions and reviews of current concepts are carried out either during the clinical application in the Operating Room or during other conferences and meetings held by the department. Also, residents participate in the clinical research projects of the department.
The training program in the department of Anesthesiology extends over four years according to the Lebanese Law and the Arab Board of Anesthesia and Intensive Care. The 4th year concentrates on different subspecialties of Anesthesiology. The trainee gets during this period practical training, theoretical teaching and research exposure. At the end of the training period, residents sit for a certification exam.
The anesthesia residency program at AUB provides an intellectual environment for the acquisition of the knowledge, skills, clinical judgment and attitudes which are essential to the practice of anesthesiology. The faculty, supporting staff and administrative staff are fully committed to these educational needs. Resident training and education are accomplished in a friendly, supportive atmosphere of mutual respect. The four year continuum of education provides residents with graduated responsibility and a broad range of anesthetic experiences.

At the end of the training period of four years, a qualifying examination is offered to assess the amount of learning accumulated and judge the competence as a specialist.
