
This course covers the basic concepts in ecology. It starts with the history and
development of ecology. The ecosystem concept provides the framework for the study of
biotic and abiotic factors. There is comprehensive coverage of physical factors and
organisms adaptations in relation to the thermal and moisture environments, weather and
climate, soils, nutrients and biogeochemical cycles. A substantial part will be devoted to
population and community ecology including population structures and dynamics, population
interactions. community structure and succession. Descriptions of various terrestrial,
freshwater and marine ecosystems will also be included
