The AUB Choir and Choral Society perform at least two major concert programs annually.  Its Christmas Concert, held in AUB’s beautiful and historically-significant Assembly Hall, is an eagerly anticipated holiday event.  Its Spring Concert often includes a choral masterwork with orchestra from the western tradition.  Works performed in past years have included Handel’s Messiah and Coronation Anthems, Charpentier's Grands motets, Haydn’s Masses and Te Deum for Maria Therese, Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de confessore, Beethoven’s Mass in C,  Fauré’s Requiem, Karl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Saint-Saëns’ Oratorio de Noël, among other significant works.

Spring 2009 commemorated the anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn, with a performance in May of his Lobgesang, The Hymn of Praise, Symphony Cantata, Opus 52, in conjunction with the inauguration of
AUB's new president, Peter F. Dorman

The AUB CHOIR

...is a group of talented students who enjoy making music together.  Performing with the AUB Choir not only develops your talents as a singer and musician ands deepens your appreciation of great music; it allows you to make lifelong friendships and contacts, and build crucial teamwork skills.  The choir is made up of undergraduate students auditioned from all faculties in the university, and performs two major concerts every year, and at important university ceremonies.  All members register for one credit; after three semesters, you have a full, three-credit free elective. Participation always begins in the Fall semester, and continues all the way to graduation commencement in June.

The AUB Choral Society

...is an ensemble of singers auditioned from the greater Beirut community, and includes graduate students, faculty and staff members, and area residents.  It rehearses one night per week, and performs with, and separately from, the AUB Choir.  Contact pm05@aub.edu.lb to participate.

Ensemble Polyphonica

...is a select vocal ensemble of Beirut-area residents specializing in early and contemporary music.  Recent programs have included works by Hildegard of Bingen and Meredith Monk, Joëlle Khoury and Guillaume de Machaut, and the motets of J. S. Bach.

Choir Participation Guidelines, Schedule and Syllabus:

Spring Semester, 2009

Paul Meers, director; Nicely 403; pm05@aub.edu.lb, ext. 4041/4351

Rehearsal periods:  Every Monday, 6.30 – 8.45, Wednesday 11-11.50, and Friday 11 – 11.50.  Section rehearsals may be held on Mondays at 11.  Required extra rehearsals as shown in the schedule.

Registration:  Every member of the AUB Choir is expected to be registered for credit, because choir participation teaches a body of musical art and literature, as well as musical performance skills. Exceptions to this guideline may be made for non-AUB students, or any student registered for less than 12 credit hours.  Non-registered students are expected to participate fully; absences from rehearsals will result in denial of performance participation, subject to the discretion of the director.

Music Scores:  Buy Mendelssohn Lobgesang Symphonie Kantate Choral Score at the AUB Bookstore, for course no. FAAH 242/243.  Other scores are property of AUB, and are checked out and loaned to you.  They must be returned in good condition on the day appointed for you to receive credit for the course.  In case of dropping the course, music must be returned to received a “W.” Do NOT use ink to mark your score.  Always bring and use a pencil at every rehearsal.

***Exams and quizzes in other classes should not conflict with a scheduled, credit-bearing class, including AUB Choir; this is AUB policy.  Please inform your professors immediately of our scheduled rehearsal times, and let them know that missing rehearsal will adversely affect your grade for this class.
